a beautiful aquatic photograph adorns the cover of a nice 3-inch cd by a gentlemen from france, whose name is james (i dont know if mha is his real sur-name but it's not important) and who used guitar, bass, glockenspiel, microphone, minidisc and field recordings to conceive two tracks titled exactly as you see, with just their duration - that keep a pleasant company over the course of 20 minutes, especially at low level in the early hours of the morning. The first takes its shape from unidentified voices to remain suspended mid-air with gentle chords and volume swells, while the second introduces a few additional harmonic movements, most notably within the realms of string-ish gradations that contribute to change perspectives a bit, althougt leaving the the general character of the music quite similar to the rest of the disc. Think about a mix of certain side of Eno's more melodic material and, for those who know him, Hypnos label's guitarist David Tollefson, the whole coverde with a charming simplicity giving this artefact a graceful warmth which is much appreciated from this observation point.

Ancora post-rock e ancora dalla Francia, ma ormai non ci stupiamo più.
I Fago.Sepia seguono quel correntone che cerca di agganciare a colpi di chitarra un'idea quasi jazz del suono e delle trame melodiche (ascoltare l'incipit di 'Cinq' per credere).
Quest'album ricalca le vie percorse da Dianogah, i primi Tortoise per poi affondare dentro la denominazione di math-rock mentre i fraseggi diventano sempre più intricati.
Cinematico quanto lezioso, il disco offre 30 minuti di un genere che conserva un suo fascino e che possiede ancora una nicchia di aficionados, come dimostra il fatto che spesso costituisce il primo approccio al post-rock per nuove band (anche in Italia).

... plus abstrait, Hervé Moire a sur son cd 'les spectres de l'humeur' décidé une focalisation inverse, c'est à dire dirigée vers l'infra. Ses compositions assechées mais toujours lumineuses rappellent (de son propre aveu) certains gestes récents de Main / Robert Hampson. Ses crépitements, ses effondrements de pièces metalliques, prennent les tournures d'un language, tandis que les vibrations les plus lisses ondulent comme les parois d'un cocon près à la liberation. Ce monde concret et onirique est soutenu, énergisé, par de belles vibrations qui le parcourent, des échos d'un travail souterrain comme un terreau fertile. Parfois, des arpèges y éclosent, s'agrègent en d'élegantes minéralisations, jamais achevées, entrainées dans un mouvement cinématographique qui dévoile un peu de l'intimité poétique de la matière.

fago.sepia - L'Âme sûre ruse mal [Bolton W. Records/aposiopèse - 2006] Glancing at the bandpic on the right reading me claiming fago.sepia to be mathrock may raise an eyebrow or two. And yes, you should forget about the Psyopus's, Orthrelm's and The Dillinger Escape Plan's of this world. This outfit apparently performs sitting down and it suits their music just fine, as it's not at all music to mosh to. Sit down and listen to the instrumental rock with a touch of jazz. Never over the top in any respect, neither in complexity or agression. Tortoise would be a reference point although these French guys show a different approach, but the vibe (but no vibes) is similar. fago.sepia is a perfect group for people that like intelligent rock, without too much testosterone or hysteria usually coming with math rock and enough activity to not lull you asleep. It will not change the world, but serves a pleasurable thirty minutes.

mha est le projet solo de l’un des guitaristes de Fago Sepia, groupe post-rock également signé sur le jeune label rennais Aposiopèse. Il s’agit là d’un deuxième EP pour l’artiste qui a déjà produit un trois titres aujourd’hui épuisé mais entièrement téléchargeable sur le site du label.

Si mha reste dans une veine ambient, il semble avec ce CD-R 3" mettre un peu de côté ses expérimentations et traitements électroniques pour laisser son instrument de prédilection, la guitare, s’exprimer plus librement. 11:46 débute par des field recordings, puis les notes de guitare limpides prennent le relais, légèrement traitées pour apporter quelques syncopes, quelques nappes linéaires apparaissent, se superposent, inquiétantes, un objet semble tomber, des bruitages viennent ajouter à l’aspect cinématographique de cette musique, sur une guitare répétitive. On est alors proche d’un post-rock ambient à la Pan American.
09:01 est peut-être plus complexe dans sa composition. L’électronique y tient une place importante au niveau du traitement sonore, mais le rendu est quasi orchestral. Superposition, allées et venues de nappes contrastées pour un résultat à la fois sombre et éclatant.

Ce petit bijou limité à 100 exemplaires se trouve dans un joli écrin, pochette plastique, impression couleur sur papier calque, une photo mystérieuse qui colle parfaitement à cette musique.

FAGO-SEPIA - L,ÂME SÛRE RUSE MAL (CD by Aposiop)
For the title of their cd they choose a palindrome, for the songs they made things less complicated: "Six", "Neuf", etc. Anyway the titles make clear that we are in the company here of a french band. An instrumental postrock combo to be more precise. They do a nice job. A lot is happening in their inventive constructed songs. With their use of riffs they succeed in building up nice layers of organic and melodic music. Very coherent and clear compositions. Besides all is done very well-crafted. I know they are around since 2002 and "L,âme sûre ruse mal" is their second. Alas I can't give you any line-up or other information. I have it not available. Another french postrock band that impressed me, like did Crevecoeur and Sincabeza in the last few years (DM).

L’ame sure ruse mal (Aposiopèse - Bolton Wonderland / 5ive Roses – 2006)

Band francese dedita ad un post-rock strumentale dalle forti tinte jazz, i Fago Sepia scongiurano il rischio “prevedibilità” con sei brani estremamente dinamici, non privi di insistiti cambi di ritmo e di guizzi improvvisi (ad esempio il clap clap che fa la sua apparizione tra le scosse di “Trois”). Due chitarre che intercalano lampi elettrici, fraseggi ipnotici e tasselli pointillistici (soffermatevi in particolare su “Neuf” e su “Cinq”); una batteria deputata a rimodellare continuamente il percorso dei pezzi; un basso che funge da collante innestando dosi sottocutanee di groove. Per gli appassionati del genere, un cd sicuramente da avere. mha (james.mha aka Florian Jamelot, guitarist in French band Fago.Sepia) alchemizes processed sounds of guitar, bass, glockenspiel, and field recordings into two delicately woven soundscapes on a twenty-one-minute, three-inch CD release (100 copies produced). Crystalline organ tones shimmer throughout the first piece, giving it a church-like air, followed by bright glockenspiel tinkling and flowing shudders of electric guitar, while the equally engrossing second is more tranquil. In the opening section, ambient tones slowly drift like ghosts through a deserted mansion until guitars and bass appear, first electrifying the sound and then bolstering dramatically its portentous symphonic ambiance until it resembles a late-twentieth classical setting of Ligeti-like character.

Ce disque démarre en douceur puis éclate en battements légers où se hissent des accords subtils d’où découlent des mélodies sournoises, escroquant, dupant par des variations malignes, taquines. Successions de rythmes jouées habilement avec élégance, avec une rigueur sautillant bravement pour subtiliser une beauté musicale ! On vogue ainsi dans une attraction d’intensité minimaliste palpable sur ”Six” et ”Trois” puis le titre ”Huit” surgit sur des variations très dynamiques, de repos faussement étalé, écourté mettant un climat paysagiste où gravitent des accords très frêles pour revenir à une rythmique spontanée comme sur ”Cinq”. Il y a un réel univers particulier dans les morceaux et ça devient une obsession. FAGO SEPIA produit un post rock digne des plus grands et nous fait vibrer de ses notes tantôt pensantes, libres et atmosphériques. Bravo !  •

Le jeune label aposiopèse fait paraître un ep au format mini-cd signé james mha, qui est en fait le projet solo d’un des guitaristes du groupe post-rock fago sepia, que l'on retrouve également sur ce petit label basé en Loire-Atlantique.
Dans un style plus calme que celui de sa formation initiale, le garçon propose un ep sur lequel on découvre 2 titres respectivement de 11 et 9 minutes qui évoquent ici plus un post-rock lent, clair, lumineux et planant, un peu à la manière de ce que peuvent faire des groupes comme Labradford, PanAmerican ou One mile North, à savoir une musique constituée de drones, de field recordings, de nappes de synthés et de longs passages de guitares, le tout arrangé au laptop.
Assez différent des trois mp3 de james mha proposés sur le site du label, ce ep 2 titres se révèle plus ouvert, moins expérimental et finalement très beau, très agréable à écouter. Une belle découverte.
